Obituary

Alice Stevens Hawkins was born February 5, 1923. She married Frederick Hawkins, Jr. on July 14, 1940. From that union were born 9- children, 26 grandchildren and 29 great grand -children. Alice joined Bethlehem Baptist Church at the age of 13 when the church was located at Sweet Home Alley and sang in the Junior Choir. Alice taught Sunday school and joined the Royal Ushers where she served as president for several years. She worked with the youth and trained many ushers at Bethlehem. She has served faithfully as a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for over 81 years.
Alice began working at American Tobacco Company where she stemmed tobacco and went on to work at Lucky Strike Cigarette Company where she hung tobacco. Next, she went to work for the James River Paper Company as a catcher of bags, but with the advent of the age of machinery, that job ended in a lay off. She then went to work for Morton G. Thalhimers, Inc, where she cleaned office buildings in the evenings, but her career at James River was not over yet. After James River Corp. split from Ethyl Corporation, Alice went to work at the James River plant on Tredegar Road. She began that career as a paper inspector and went on to represent co-workers as a Union Representative. As her abilities and knowledge of paper developed, Alice was promoted to a supervisor of Quality Control in the laboratories of James River Corporation. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association where she received many awards and honors. She remained in that position until she retired in 1987.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Hawkins, Jr. and her sons Frederick, III and Tyrome Hawkins. She is survived by her children: Delores Pointer, James Hawkins, Jacqueline Hines, Brenda, Michael, Larry, and Wendy Hawkins, a dedicated uncle, Aubrey Stevens, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
