Carrie Burton Neal, 92, of Richmond, VA, departed this life on Saturday, October 27, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born to the late Wallace and Maggie Washington Robinson. She was the eldest daughter of three girls. Carrie was preceded in death by three brothers: William, Wallace and Walter Robinson; two sisters: Gertrude Epps and Bessie Robinson; her youngest son Leon D. Burton; and a grandson, Charles Singleton.

Carrie was born and raised in Newtown. She graduated from Maggie Walker High School-home of the Mighty Dragons. She was baptized at an early age and attended Moore Street Baptist Church, where she served in the Nurse’s Ministry. She was the Den Mother of the Sea Explorers Boy Scouts Troop, and she served as a Girl Scouts Leader.

She furthered her education by attending nursing school and acquired a LPN License at what was once St. Phillips Hospital at 12th and Marshall, and is now known as VCU Hospital. The St. Phillips School of Nursing operated from 1920 to 1962, when the last of its 688 graduates received their diplomas.

Carrie was a member of the BPO (Benevolent Protective Order) of Reindeers Association of Richmond, VA. She was also a member of the Benjamin Temple of the Elks for 10 years, where she moved up to their highest honor. She then joined the Queen Esther of Elks and was a member for 40 years, serving as their Secretary and their Trustee. Carrie loved children and worked with the Foster Parent’s Association and became their Secretary.

Carrie loved to crochet, work in her yard, share her wisdom and a few savory puns, do the turn around, and read novels. She was a well-known visitor at the North Avenue Branch of the library; and many newborn babies and family members to this day are kept warm by the beautiful blankets she lovingly crocheted.

We call her mother; others affectionately called her Aunt Carrie, Grandma, GG, Auntie, Mrs. Neal, or Miss Carrie. She was always available with a listening ear and kind words of encouragement. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, great aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and a true friend that will be dearly missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Theodore D. Burton (Catherine); a daughter, Candace Brown; a brother, Edward Harris; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, other relatives, long-standing and caring friends, and her faithful pet dog, Sox.
