ARVIN
Deacon Louis E. Arvin Sr. of Richmond, Va., departed this life February 24, 2005. Born February 2, 1913, to the late Jackson and Rosa Bland Arvin of Richmond, Va., he leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Ethel Diggs Arvin; daughter, Eartha L. Arvin-Thornton (Jackie); stepdaughter, Mrs. Doris Jiles (Westly); eight grandchildren, Shanna Thornton, Shalisha Thornton, Mikael Thornton, Gabriel Thornton, Joshua Thornton, Carlus Arvin, Mrs. Karen Mason (Harold) and Allen Jiles (Hope); four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Watson; brother-in-law, Dr. John M. Diggs (Virginia); several nieces, nephews and cousins, among them, Deacon Jackson Arvin (Barbara), Warren Arvin Jr. (Ruth), Juanita Arvin, Julia McGill, Sarah Brown, Helene Womack and Emma Briggs; many family members, friends and neighbors, among them, Deacon Clearance Hamilton (devoted), Deacon Jerry Smith (devoted), Deacon Juanita Armstead (devoted), Mrs. Muriel Johnson (devoted) and Mrs. Rosetter Thornton (devoted). Louis was a graduate of Henderson Institute in Henderson, North Carolina. He was employed for the railroad for several years. He retired from the Department of Highways and Transportation for 19 years Public Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was a dedicated and devoted deacon at Mount Carmel Baptist Church for 40 years. His motto was ''Keep your hands above the table.'' He was known to many as ''Old Louis.'' Funeral services will be officiated by Dr. Steven A.G. Howard at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 32nd and Broad, on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to services.
