Obituary

Ida Hester Louise Shaw departed this life on Sunday, June 11th at VCU Health System after suddenly falling ill. Ms. Shaw was born in 1927 in Richmond, VA to Willie Sydnor and Mildred Simms-Sydnor. She is preceded by her parents and daughter Melinda "Nennie" Smith, sisters Sarah Scroggins, Martha Stringer, Anna Richardson, Mariah Smith, Mary Branch and brothers David, James and John Sydnor.

To cherish her memories, she leaves her sister Catherine Woolfolk (Bishop Tom Woolfolk) and brother Bill Sydnor (Maria); sons Melvin Sydnor (Charlotte), Charles Shaw Sr. (Nancy) and daughters Vera Clanton, Jean Everett (Harvey), and Christine Royal; Sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren and a host of devoted nieces and nephew.

She was able to age at home with the care of her family and nurse aide Debra Caple.

Ms. Shaw was educated in Richmond Public Schools and later began a career as a nurse aide for many years. She worked in various nursing homes throughout Richmond and later worked as a private duty nurse until retirement.

Ms. Shaw became saved in 1958 and raised her family with a strong sense of faith and religion and has been a member in good standing since, at Greater Refuge Church. She has served in many capacities during her tenure to include, Church Mother, long time Missionary, and member of The Golden Guilds, Calvary Singers and Inspirational Choir. She was a prayer warrior and the backbone to her family. Ms. Shaw was dependable and dedicated to those she knew, especially her very best friend Yvonne Jennings.

Ms. Shaw has said that she was inspired by her family and thus never missed a moment to celebrate memorable events, holidays and gatherings. She often enjoyed family gatherings, church events, watching game shows and Sunday's Best. Her life was filled with love and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.
