Edith Lorraine Merritt was born July 22, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York. She was one of three children born to Earl Lester Deane and Florence Irene Folks. She had two brothers, Linwood F. Deane and Marvin Deane. They were all very close with each other.

She had a happy and wonderful childhood under the protection of her two brothers. She graduated from junior high school with honors, and then she went on to graduate from Brooklyn High School of Women’s Garment Trades, where she became a highly accomplished seamstress.
She met and married Morris King, with whom she gave birth to two sons, Vincent King, and the late Donald M. King (AKA Takbir Shariff). Edith found a career in the former N.Y. Telephone Company as an operator, and she later excelled to become a manager in what is now known as the Verizon Corporation. She divorced from Morris King and later met and married John Merritt. She was a devoted wife all the way up to his passing in 2014.

She also attended Queensboro Community College, where she went on to earn her associate degree in Business Administration.

Edith was a loving mother, who cared deeply about her family. She loved to attend family gatherings and spend time with her loved ones. She is survived by her brother, Linwood Deane; her son, Vincent King; daughters in law, Delores King, Verita Sharif, Trudell Merritt, Carol King, and Victoria Sharif; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She will be greatly missed.
